How to Identify Pure Rose Water?

Is Your Rose Water the Real Deal?

When it comes to beauty rituals, few products have stood the test of time like rose water or Rose hydrosol. Loved for centuries and embraced by cultures worldwide for its aromatic and soothing benefits, pure rose water is a must-have product for healthy, happy skin.

However, to protect your skin from potential harm, you must choose pure rose water over counterfeit scented waters. Yes, the market is filled with fake rose water made with artificial additives and contains little to no rose water element.

Since they lack therapeutic benefits and may even cause skin and eye irritation, knowing how to spot pure rose water is not just a choice but a necessity for your well-being. As champions of natural beauty rituals, we believe in empowering our customers with knowledge to make informed choices for their skin and soul.

In this guide, we are sharing some some helpful tips to differentiate between natural and fake rose water so you can always pick the right product for your needs.

How Is Pure Rose Water Made?

Pure rose water or Rose Hydrosol is made using a traditional technique known as steam distillation. The process starts with a careful selection of fresh, high-quality rose petals. At Vriksha Veda, we use fresh Damask Rose petals for their rich fragrance and therapeutic properties.

The rose petals are placed in a large vessel called a still, which is filled with water. As the water starts boiling, the steam passes through the petals, breaking down cells that contain essential oils and beneficial volatile compounds.

This steam travels up, into the condenser where it cools down to condense back into a liquid state. This resulting liquid is known as rose distillate or Rose Hydrosol and is 100% pure rose water.

How to Recognize Authentic Rose Water?

1. Check the ingredients

Always read the ingredient list on the label before you buy Rose Water or Rose hydrosol. Fake rose water will have several ingredients like synthetic colour, fragrance, rose oil/essence, emulsifiers or preservatives. Pure rose water will have only one ingredient- steam-distilled rose water. The label should also indicate what variety of rose was used to prepare the rose water.

2. Evaluate its fragrance and colour

Another way to check the purity of rose water is through its colour and aroma. Pure rose water is always colourless like water and will have a delicate floral fragrance. So if the product has an overpowering or synthetic scent and is pink in colour, leave it out as it likely contains artificial dyes and fragrances that won’t offer you any therapeutic benefits.

3. Buy the right packaging

Exposure to light can degrade the quality of rose water and diminish its fragrance and potency over time. So pure rose water is always packaged in dark glass bottles to preserve its freshness.

4. Make sure it doesn’t foam

Some sellers mix rose essential oil with water with the help of solubilizers to create natural rose water. While it looks and smells similar to pure rose water, it will not offer the same therapeutic benefits that true hydrosol does.

So to check if the product indeed contains rose hydrosol, shake the bottle vigorously. If you notice a soap-like foam, it’s a clear sign that the product contains solubilizers.

5.  Consider the cost

While higher prices don’t always guarantee better quality, it’s best to be cautious of excessively cheap rose water. It takes almost 20 kilos of rose petals to create 10 litres of rose water. Therefore, unusually low prices may indicate that the product has been diluted or compromised in quality.
